Elan Mendel is an associate with Shipkevich Law Firm, who comes to us from a boutique New York law firm specializing in bankruptcy law and insurance coverage. Mr. Mendel is admitted to practice law in New Jersey and New York. Prior to joining Shipkevich Law Firm, he worked in the legal departments of a number of multi-national corporations, including that of a major Futures Commission Merchant and Retail Foreign Exchange Dealer in New York. In his prior work, Mr. Mendel was involved in Chapter 7 Trustee and federal receiver representation in the federal District and Bankruptcy Courts in the Southern and Eastern Districts of New York. He helped prosecute countless fraudulent conveyance and preference actions, including actions against foreign governments and large, multi-national corporations. In this capacity, he helped negotiate the turnover and administer the disposition of an aggregate millions of dollars in estate assets. Mr. Mendel’s insurance coverage experience involved extensive insurer representation in insurance coverage lawsuits, through trial and appeal. He consistently obtained declaratory judgments against insureds and other liable insurers, saving millions of dollars in claims.

Mr. Mendel worked for the Honorable Frederic Block, United States District Judge in the Eastern District of New York. Prior to becoming an attorney, he performed internal AML/BSA and currency audits for Commerce Bank, and earlier worked for the New York State legislative assembly. Mr. Mendel earned his B.S. from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute and his J.D. and certificate in business law from Brooklyn Law School.

Elan holds the following professional memberships: New York County Lawyers’ Association, Futures and Derivatives Committee, Bankruptcy Law Committee, Turnaround Management Association.

He is also active as a volunteer with the VITA (Volunteer Income Tax Assistance) Program.
